Engelsberg Applied History Speaker Series: ‘Democracy in Exile: Hans Speier and the Rise of the Defense Intellectual,’ with Dr. Daniel Bessner and Prof. Andrew Preston

October 23, 2018 By Support

23 October 2018, 6.00 – 7.30pm, War Studies Meeting Room (K6.07)

Bessner explored the interwar origins of the US national security state, arguing that the experience of the Weimar Republic’s collapse compelled a transatlantic generation of German and US intellectuals to adopt a jaundiced view of public opinion that they eventually institutionalized in the national security organizations of the early Cold War.
