The Military Operation to Capture or Kill Osama bin Laden: A Case Study in Presidential Decisionmaking

Nick Rasmussen was Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) in 2011, when SEAL Team Six was given the presidential greenlight to assault a compound believed to contain Osama bin Laden. The compound was deep inside Pakistani territory, meters from the Pakistani ‘Westpoint’. The chances of a military and diplomatic disaster were high. Rasmussen will explore the key factors that weighed in the decision-making process of a famously risk-averse US administration.
